GETTING TO KNOW YOUR PERSIAN

The Persian cat is famous for its long, luxurious coat and affectionate nature.

They love to lounge around and their calm demeanor means they generally prefer to be indoor cats and around people. With such a long coat, Persian cats can have issues with hairballs, which is why we tailor-make a diet for them that is enriched with fibre to naturally limit hairball formation.

Temperament

Persian cats are gentle, placid creatures that prefer quiet environments and lounging on the couch. The epitome of a lap cat, the Persian cat usually enjoys spending quality time with their owners in a calm atmosphere. They are happy to socialise with children but are unlikely to join in boisterous games with them.

Weight

Usually weighing between 4-6 kg, the Persian cat is not overly active so attention to nutrition and exercise must be paid to avoid weight gain.

Muscles & Joints

Persian cats have characteristic flat face (brachycephalic) this can result in difficulties breathing. Persian cats can als be genetically predisposed to some conditions including Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and hip dysplasia. If you have a Persian cat regular appointments with your Veterinarian are recommended to identify any health concerns early on.

Skin & Coat

Persians come in many different colours including ‘Self” (all one colour), ‘Colourpoint’ (coloured at the tips), mixed colours and ‘Tabby’. A Persian cat's beautiful long coat is high maintenance and requires daily grooming in order to prevent tangling. Persian cats also have a tendency to tear-overflow from their eyes due to their characteristic flat faces, so washing under their eyes to prevent staining should be a regular occurrence.
