Temperament

The British Shorthair is a friendly and affectionate breed known for its loyalty and devotion. They form strong bonds with other animals (including dogs) and children, which makes them a great choice for families. Energetic at times, they’re much more likely to be watching the world go by from the comfort of their basket or favourite chair. You probably won’t find one snuggling on your lap, but they will happily curl up in a ball next to you on the couch.

Weight

Females are smaller and will usually weight less than males. Usually weighing between 5-8 kg, British Shorthairs can be prone to weight gain. To make sure their weight comes from muscle rather than fat, their diet should be watched carefully and they should be encouraged to exercise.

Muscles & Joints

British Shorthairs are heavy, solid cats with an impressive muscle mass and a compact, sturdy physique. In order to protect their bodies against the added strain this can produce, their diet should include Omega 3 fatty acids.

Skin & Coat

The British Shorthair’s plush coat and abundant undercoat sheds heavily all year round. You can keep on top of this by giving them a simple groom with a brush once a week. This will not only help reduce the amount of loose hair around your house, it will also reduce the likelihood of your British Shorthair suffering from hairballs.

During their growth period, the British Shorthair’s digestive system remains immature and continues developing gradually over several weeks.
